2008 Southwestern Regional Tour

The Albuquerque Chapter of VMCCA is hosting a 2008 Regional Tour in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It will be a Friday-Saturday-Sunday tour on May 2-4, 2008.

Las Cruces is New Mexico’s second largest city.  It is in southern New Mexico at the intersection of I-10 and I-25.  It is approximately 200 miles from Albuquerque, 35 miles from El Paso, 380 miles from Phoenix, 600 miles from San Antonio, and 670 miles from Denver.

The weather should be pleasantly spring like in Las Cruces in early May. We are planning several driving tours and gatherings in and around Las Cruces.

Registration will open Thursday evening at the host hotel.  Friday’s tour will be a 120 mile loop around the Organ Mountains including parts of El Paso and Alamogordo.  Highlights will be White Sands National Monument (Bring your Golden Eagle Pass if you have one), and an optional tour to Empire Castings in El Paso – producer of rare cylinder heads and manifolds for antique cars.  Alamogordo has many attractions of its own, including a Mach 5 rocket sled:  Accelerate 0-5000 MPH and back to zero again in seconds, rides may be available.  On Saturday we tour the pecan orchards south of Las Cruces, ending up at the War Eagles Aircraft and Car Museum in Santa Teresa, NM.  This fabulous museum will be combined with a Texas barbeque luncheon.  The tour officially ends after breakfast on Sunday Morning, but if there’s interest, we’ll have an extra short tour of the Rio Grande valley north of Las Cruces after breakfast on Sunday.

We encourage first time tourists to try this regional tour; it will be fun with the flavor of VMCCA’s legendary National Tours – without the expense and time commitment.

The host hotel is the Best Western Mission Inn 1765 S Main Street, Las Cruces, NM, 88005. Phone (505) 524-8591. The room rate is $74 plus tax including a full breakfast. The hotel is pet friendly with a $10 surcharge per pet.  Ask for the block of rooms reserved by Joyce Sullivan.
