Touring season is now in full swing. It’s exciting to think about the places we will visit and the precious time we will spend together as members of our special organization, most especially as good friends who gather to do what brings us all joy—touring together.

During a recent discussion about touring, a comment came to light for me, prompting me to think about those who no longer are able to tour as they have previously. For our members who have downsized, no longer own a car, are not comfortable driving a vintage car, or for whom trailering is no longer an option—how do we keep them engaged and active in the touring activity?

Some have found sharing rides with friends to be a good alternative. How about those who need to get to the tour by other means and then ride along? Finding vacant seats in a car may not be all that easy and may require help from friends and fellow members to locate those empty seats. For those who have been active but now want the reliability and comfort of a newer car, how do we welcome them to be part of our tours?

Of course, we want to see the vintage variety of cars on our tours, but can we include those folks too? A concern might be that, when tour capacity is capped due to lodging or venue size, do we give preference to those who are bringing their vintage car? These are all considerations to think about.

Those friendships we’ve made through the years are valuable. Our organization should do whatever we can to accommodate those whose heart is still with us, even though they no longer have the ability to trailer and/or drive their vintage cars.
